NordVPN for Torrenting (2026): P2P Servers, No Port Forwarding
NordVPN is a solid choice for torrenting if you mostly download and seed casually. Torrenting works on any of its standard servers, every desktop app has a kill switch (the Mac App Store build calls its version VPN bypass prevention), and outside auditors have reviewed its no-logs promise six times. What it does not offer is port forwarding, which matters if you seed heavily, use private trackers with ratio rules or pull from small, ageing swarms.
So the short verdict: pick NordVPN for simple, fast P2P downloads with a well-audited provider; skip it, or pair it with something else, if being connectable to every peer is a priority. Below is what changed with its P2P servers, what the missing port costs you, where its SOCKS5 proxy fits, which kill switch to turn on, and a qBittorrent set-up you can test yourself. Everything here assumes lawful peer-to-peer; NordVPN's own support pages say its proxy set-up should not be used to get round copyright rules, and we agree.
Short verdict for torrenters
| Feature | NordVPN | Proton VPN | Private Internet Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| P2P allowed | All standard servers | All paid plans, on P2P servers | Yes |
| Port forwarding | No | Yes, paid plans, P2P servers, random port | Yes, on select servers |
| SOCKS5 proxy | Yes, port 1080, NL/SE/US hosts | Not covered here | Not covered here |
| Desktop kill switch | Yes; check it is switched on | Yes | Yes |
| Latest no-logs check | Deloitte, fieldwork Nov–Dec 2025 | Securitum, 5th annual, 2026 | Deloitte, limited assurance, as of 31 Oct 2025 |
| Renews at (US, before tax) | $139.08 a year (Basic), $219.48 a year (Complete) | $83.88 a year (VPN Plus) | No US price verified |
Read the last row with care. NordVPN's renewal prices are the ones on its renewal-price schedule in October 2026; we could not verify its first-term discount prices from a US connection, so we leave them out. Check the price at checkout, and note that NordVPN bills one- and two-year plans upfront and adds tax on top. On 9 October 2026 Proton VPN Plus was listed at $3.49 a month for the first two years ($83.76 billed) before renewing at $83.88 a year.
If that trade suits you, NordVPN is the one we link to most often here, and you can see NordVPN's current plans. If port forwarding is the deciding feature, Proton VPN and Private Internet Access are the two mainstream options in this comparison that provide it.
P2P servers: how they work now
This is the detail most NordVPN torrenting guides now get wrong. NordVPN used to send torrent users to a separate list of P2P servers. Its support centre says that category has been removed from the server list and that all standard NordVPN servers now support P2P activities. The change arrived with iOS and Android app 9.0.0, Windows 8.0.0 and macOS 10.0.0, so if your app is up to date you will not find a P2P entry to click.
In practice that makes set-up simpler. Connect to an ordinary server, ideally one near you for speed, and torrent from there. If a tutorial tells you to open a P2P section or quotes a count of P2P servers, it was written for an older version of the apps. Specialty servers such as Double VPN and Onion Over VPN exist for other purposes; nothing in NordVPN's P2P note says you need them for torrenting.
No port forwarding: what it costs you
NordVPN states plainly that it does not offer port forwarding, explaining that multiple customers use the same servers. Without a forwarded port, other peers cannot open a connection to you; you can only connect out to them. In a large, healthy swarm you will rarely notice, because most peers you need are reachable. The cost shows up in three places.
- Seeding. Peers who are themselves behind a firewall cannot reach you, so you upload to fewer people. If you seed lawful files to keep them available, your contribution is smaller.
- Private trackers. Communities that enforce upload ratios notice when you are unconnectable, because your upload falls behind your download.
- Small swarms. If only a handful of peers hold a file, and some are also unconnectable, two unconnectable peers cannot talk at all. Downloads of niche material can crawl.
If none of those describe you, the missing port is a minor point. If they do, choose a provider that forwards ports. Proton VPN forwards a random port on its P2P servers for paid plans, and its support page warns the number usually changes when you reconnect, so you update it in your client. PIA says it offers built-in port forwarding on select servers, so check which locations support it in its app. Our port forwarding explainer covers who really needs it, and our best VPN for torrenting comparison shows which providers offer it.
SOCKS5 proxy: status and when it helps
NordVPN does run SOCKS5 proxy servers, and its support article gives a qBittorrent set-up: proxy type SOCKS5, port 1080, and a host such as nl.socks.nordhold.net, se.socks.nordhold.net or us.socks.nordhold.net, with city-level hosts in Amsterdam, Stockholm and several US cities. You authenticate with your NordVPN service credentials, which are different from your normal login, and tick Use proxy for peer connections and Authentication.
What the article does not say is that the proxy encrypts anything, and the SOCKS5 protocol itself does not. A proxy changes the IP that peers see for traffic sent through it; it does not wrap your session in an encrypted tunnel, so your ISP can still identify BitTorrent. It also covers only the traffic qBittorrent sends through it. For privacy from your ISP the full VPN app is the right tool, and the proxy is a niche option, for example on a device where you cannot run the VPN app. Running both at once adds complexity without adding much protection.
Kill switch and app-level kill switch
NordVPN's kill switch differs by platform, so check yours rather than assuming it is active. Windows users get a pair. One, the Internet Kill Switch, blocks all traffic once the NordVPN connection is gone; the other, the App Kill Switch, shuts named programs, such as qBittorrent, if the tunnel fails. On Android 8.0 and later the kill switch is system-wide. The macOS App Store version uses what NordVPN calls VPN bypass prevention, while the version downloaded from its website has an App Kill Switch. On Linux you turn it on with the command nordvpn set killswitch on.
For torrenting, turn on the system-wide option on your platform and add qBittorrent to the App Kill Switch list on Windows as a second layer. Then bind the client to the VPN adapter, which keeps it from using your normal connection even if the app misbehaves. Our kill switch guide for torrenting explains the difference between the two types.
Setting up qBittorrent with NordVPN
This set-up takes about ten minutes and leaves you with a client that can only talk through NordVPN, plus proof that it does.
- Turn on the kill switch: the Internet Kill Switch on Windows, the system-wide option on Android or Linux.
- Connect to any standard server; current apps no longer have a separate P2P list.
- In qBittorrent, open Options, then Advanced, and set Network interface to NordVPN's adapter. On Linux the open-source client names it nordlynx for NordLynx and nordtun for OpenVPN. On Windows and macOS, note the adapter that appears only while you are connected and select that.
- Restart qBittorrent and run a torrent IP check, such as ipleak.net's Torrent Address detection, which reports the IP your client announces. It should be the NordVPN server's address. Then disconnect NordVPN and confirm transfers stop.
- If you later switch between NordLynx and OpenVPN, the adapter name changes, so select the new one.
Two related details: NordVPN's servers use UDP 51820 for NordLynx and TCP 443 or UDP 1194 for OpenVPN, which helps if a network blocks one of them. On Linux, the 4.0.0 client removed its IPv6 setting, with NordVPN saying IPv6 support is on hold because of leak risks, so IPv6 is not something you need to configure there. More binding detail is in split tunnelling for your torrent client.

Is NordVPN's no-logs claim checked?
For torrenters this matters more than speed, because the VPN provider sees the connections your ISP no longer can. Counting from 2018, NordVPN's announcements and press reports list six outside checks: two by PwC (2018, 2020) and four by Deloitte (2022, 2023 and the ends of 2024 and 2025). Deloitte's newest round ran between 10 November and 12 December 2025, was announced on 3 February 2026 and, by press accounts, took in regular, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers. The full report is available only to logged-in NordVPN customers.
An assurance engagement checks the set-up at a point in time; it is not a guarantee about every future day. Still, a regular, named, dated check is the best evidence a provider can offer, and it is more than many P2P-friendly VPNs publish. NordVPN and Surfshark have shared a parent since the companies merged in February 2022, so the two are not independent alternatives to each other.

Price, trial and refund
Once the first term ends, Basic renews at $139.08 and Complete at $219.48 per year, excluding tax, per the renewal table we read in October 2026. First-term prices are discounted but vary by country and promotion; confirm them at checkout. The money-back guarantee is 30 days on first purchases only, and renewals are not refundable. New customers buying a one- or two-year plan on the web can try it free for 7 days (card or PayPal needed); Google Play offers first-time Android users a shorter, 3-day trial. A plan covers 10 devices.
If the trade-offs above fit how you torrent, start with NordVPN here and run the IP test on day one, inside the refund window.
Edge cases
- Phones and tablets. Proton's support pages point out that torrent client apps are not allowed on Apple's App Store, so on an iPhone or iPad there is little to torrent with in the first place. On Android, NordVPN's kill switch is system-wide from Android 8.0.
- Routers. Running NordVPN on your router protects the whole house, yet the router knows nothing about qBittorrent, so app-level kill switches and binding still belong on the PC. Keep the binding on the computer that runs the client.
- A dedicated IP. NordVPN sells a dedicated IP add-on, listed at a renewal of $81.48 a year in October 2026. A fixed address also makes your sessions easier to link to one another over time, so it adds little for P2P.
- Free trial timing. The 7-day web trial starts a paid plan automatically unless you cancel. If you plan to test P2P during the trial, run the IP check early.
The legal line
Nothing about NordVPN changes what is legal to download. Servers that allow P2P, proxies and kill switches protect the privacy of lawful transfers such as Linux distributions, public-domain media and open datasets. Sharing copyrighted work without permission remains infringement whether or not it goes through a VPN, and a VPN is not a defence. Our guide to whether torrenting is legal sets out the distinction.
